Mission Trip to the
Berry Islands
On Wednesday, October 1, 2008 the President of the Adventist Church in the
Northern Bahamas, Pastor E. Bryan Tinker along with the Executive Secretary,
Pastor M. A. Smith and the Personal Ministries Director, Pastor Henry Moncur
travelled to the Berry Islands to establish the nucleus of a congregation and
Branch Sabbath School on Great Harbour Cay in the Berry Islands.
The Mission officials met with a group of Seventh-day Adventist believers and
began the process of organizing and structuring them into a fellowship of
worshippers. There are at present about 15 persons who will meet for bible
study, Sabbath School lesson review, prayer, worship and fellowship. Those
present at the meeting were challenged to consistently witness for Jesus Christ,
maintain the Adventist lifestyle of Christianity and to increase their numbers
so that during 2009 they could be fully organized into a church. The Mission is
committed to servicing, nurturing and developing our brothers and sisters living
in the Berry Islands.
The Berry Islands have "a land
mass totaling only about a dozen square miles, these cays rest on the eastern
edge of the Great Bahama Bank, starting with Great Stirrup Cay and extending to
Chub Cay in the south, the largest of them is Great Harbor Cay at 8,300 acres.
The Berry Islands lie some 132 miles east of Miami (one hour by a small plane)
and 30 miles northwest of Nassau (20 minutes by air). The population is about
800 persons." This chain of islands is often referred to as "The Fish Bowl
of the Bahamas".
