Adventists Join Public Health, Faith Groups in Commending U.S. Anti-Smoking Bill

Seventh-day Adventist anti-smoking advocates are among more than a thousand public health, faith and other non-governmental groups applauding a new bill heralded as the strongest action ever taken by the United States government to reduce tobacco use. Signed into law last week by U.S. President Barack Obama, the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act is expected to give unprecedented authority to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to restrict tobacco manufacture and marketing, with particular focus on keeping kids smoke-free, anti-smoking activists say. West Indies Union Conference "Visitor Magazine" Now Available

Despite the worldwide financial gloom and upsurge in crime and violence, the first quarter of 2009 was a most eventful period in West Indies Union Conference. We began with the “Season of Reaping” as we focused on Pentecost and More. At the end of the first quarter 5,930 souls were baptized. The Visitor magazine features work done in the Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Jamaica, and the Turks and Caicos Islands.  Read more

Adventist Review article. No longer is the cell phone such a pariah--only ringing cell phones are. Instead, church leaders are inviting worshippers to tweet and text their way through services as a way to share their prayers and reflections with neighbors in the pews, or their family, friends and "followers" on Twitter. Minister of State for Finance and Public Service Addresses GBA Graduates
The Hon. Zhivago Laing, Minister of State for Finance and Public Service and the Member of Parliament for Marco City in the Bahamas addressed the Grand Bahama Academy Grade 12 Graduates on Sunday, June 14 during the Commencement Exercises at Our Lucaya Hotel Convention Centre. He said that students must strive to arrive at a place called fulfillment as they seek a job and pursue further education.  Acknowledging that the  world is in a global recession, Mr. Laing gave the graduates tips on how they can “get their feet in the door”.  He further admonished them to take the job they can get until they can get the job they want. West Indies Union President Speaks at GBA Baccalaureate Service

Pastor Derek Bignall, president of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the West Indies, charged the historic Grade 12 graduates of Grand Bahama Academy in Freeport, Grand Bahama at their Baccalaureate Service on June 13 that excellence has to do with being yourself, who you are! It's not pitting oneself against another person. He told the students in attendance during the church service at the Freeport Church "you have something unique to offer this world that no one else can offer". He encouraged them to emulate the life of the Biblical character Daniel. He was a person of prayer, principle, perseverance who practiced excellence.

 
North Bahamas Conference for June 13 - The Evangel 
 
Grand Bahama Academy is the Social Science Champions in the Northern Bahamas
Grand Bahama Academy, a K-3 to Grade12 Seventh-day Adventist institution in the northern Bahamas, was victorious at the 2009 District Primary School Social Studies championships. Some 18 primary schools and approximately 100 young persons vied for the coveted title, answering more than 300 questions in six categories: history, tourism, government, civics and current affairs, geography, resources and people around the world.
