Evangelism

The advance of the month of March always signals that the arrival of spring is on the way.  More so, in the life of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, it also signals that evangelistic activities in the form of crusades are in the air.  Beginning tonight, and over the course of the next few weeks, a number of our churches within the territory of the North Bahamas Mission will be engaged in evangelistic series designed to rescue the lost.

Yet, the age old question that I am certain may be on some minds as we approach these meetings is “Why are we having crusade again?  We just had one recently, why do we need another one again and so soon?”

As you read the Bible, you quickly realize that the role of the church was to take the message of a redeeming Saviour to a lost world.  The children of Israel failed in their appointed tasks to undertake this mission, however, after the death of Jesus, the Book of Acts describes that the apostles and the new Christians were so motivated by the sacrifice of Christ for them, that they went everywhere “turning the word upside down” with the proclamation about a soon coming Saviour.  Not only were they involved in house to house ministry, but public proclamation was the order of the day.  They were so focused on mission that nothing hindered them.

So why do we have the public proclamation of the word in crusades again?  Recognizing as we do as Seventh-day Adventists that the hour is late, we redeem the time by giving the trumpet a certain sound that all may hear and decide.  This is no time for idleness or slothfulness, every pastor, every officer, every member is to be engaged in telling the world.

In the words of Ellen White, “The mission of the church of Christ is to save perishing sinners. It is to make known the love of God to men, and to win them to Christ by the efficacy of that love. The truth for this time must be carried into the dark corners of the earth, and this work may begin at home.”  Ye Shall Receive Power, page 245

So why do we have the public proclamation of the word in crusades again?  Because the mission of the church is all about sounding the loud cry.  While concerts and buildings and air-condition and programmes are good, they are only aids to the mission of the church.

So as our various churches enter in evangelistic campaigns, may I encourage all of our members to make a renewed commitment to give of their all in support of our campaign.  For only when the largest portion of the church are labourers together with God, will God then pour out His Spirit.
